It's a travel day with the final destination being Palermo, which is where our tour will begin in two days. Heading north out of Ragusa, we stopped in the town of Caltagirone. (We had one full day in Palermo and one full day in Cefalu.)
Caltagirone, a town known for painted pottery, has a 142-step staircase decorated in local ceramics. It made a nice stop on the way to Palermo where our Rick Steves tour would begin.
Truthfully, we saw no need to climb up to the top. The stairs themselves are tall, and Bob gets lightheaded going up. The view down from about halfway up was good enough.
Caltagirone is also known the painted ceramic heads and they can be found in other parts of Sicily. They are intricate and creative, but not something we needed to collect. Plus, they are quite expensive.
The next few photos are of scenery taken along the road. We were surprised at the variety and beauty of the island.
